WinRar Packed data CRC failed solution

Written by Helmut on Jun 20th, 2008

Here’s the solution to WinRar error “Packed data CRC failed“, to make your downloaded movie play, follow these steps:

1. Click on file ending with “..part1.rar” with right mouse button, and choose “Extract file…”

2. The window will open, where you must tick the “Keep broken files”:

winrar settings

3. Click “OK” and let the WinRar extract, durin extraction ingore the error messages, but don’t close them or WinRar after extracting is finished:
winrar error messages

4. Leave error messages and WinRar open while watching the movie!

5. Go and donate me for some beer, as i saved your ass from not watching another nice download ;)

This way i was able to watch DVD copy extracted from broken rar files. If i closed the winrar or error message before watching, the movie didn’t play. And i use VLC player for watching movies, the Windows Media Player had problems with this avi file.

Tried Helmut’s suggestion - it looked promising for a while - at least this time I was able to see a file name listed in the folder to extract to. Only problem, the extracted file in my *.rar download is not a *.avi file, it is a *.img file, which my computer opens with Nero Burning Rom. Nero had errors reading the file and the burn process failed.
I receive this “WinRar Packed Data CRC Error” message too frequently in my movie downloads - more often than not at least one of the *.rar files gives this error. It is a pain in the butt. I am a novice computer user, I would really like to know what CRC Error actually is, but more importantly, how to avoid it in the first instance.
I think the problem is most likely on my side, because I think it is unlikely that almost every movie I try to download from various websites contains corrupt files. Occasionally I am lucky and I am able to download all the *.rar files of an *.avi move without any WinRar CRC Error Messages, but mostly not.

I think I spoke too quickly in my previous comment. I checked the DVD after Nero Burning ROM had done it’s thing (and told me “burn process failed”. To my amazement, all the VOB and other files were there! The DVD played perfectly - thanks Helmut - your a genius.

  3. Helmut Says:

hey, Michael, i’m glad it worked for you somehow!! :)
    spread the word!

It doesn’t work for me. I have one file in a 49 file RAR that fails. I can create the video using your method but I can’t watch the video and nero can burn it.

    Genius!

    Hi,

Tried this method for a 700 MB movie file, but it did not extract. Stopped at 40 MB. I know the files are Ok because I tried extracting files that I had already extracted but I still get the CRC error.
    Please help

    Cheers

i’ve found that using a different program to unpack works for me. i use free rar extract frog, and it does the trick. i got 20 errors out of 38 files and one was worse than the normal crc error with winrar, but extractfrog had no problem.
